Frequently Asked Questions

For the best performance, we suggest using whole black peppercorns in our pepper mills. Cole & Mason pepper mills can also accommodate varieties like Tellicherry or bold pepper. Pink peppercorns may be used if mixed with another pepper type, as they are technically berries rather than true peppercorns. For salt mills, we recommend coarse sea salt that is dry and suitable for grinding, such as Rock Salt, Himalayan Salt, or Salt Pearls. Avoid using pre-ground salt, salt flakes, or wet salt, as they may affect performance.

If your mill has a knob, turn this anti-clockwise for a coarser setting or clockwise for a finer setting. The knob will either be located on the top of the mill, or on the base depending on which mill you have. To watch a video on how to change the grind setting of our mills, head to our YouTube channel here.

For effortless and mess-free filling, we highly recommend using our Dover Stainless Steel Salt and Pepper Funnel. Simply unscrew the cap from the base of the mill and fill up with whole peppercorns or coarse salt to the maximum fill indicator then replace the cap and start grinding, remove the mill's top from the body, and place the funnel over the post before adding salt or pepper. If not using a funnel, follow the same steps and pour the salt or pepper directly into the mill.

The best way to clean a mill is to use a damp (not wet), colourless cloth. After cleaning, dry the mill straight away - do not leave wet. The mechanisms should not be rinsed, submerged in water, placed on a wet surface or get wet in any way. Please do not use cleaning products on the mills, for example, anti-bacterial or kitchen spray.

The mill mechanism is covered by a 10 year guarantee and the whole product has a two-year manufacturer warranty. Just be sure to keep your receipt or proof of purchase in case you need assistance.
